The shop is on the west side of Union Street, which is a shop-lined alley running between the two main shopping streets of Friar Street and Broad Street, known locally as "Smelly Alley" (thanks to the wet fish shop, shoe repairers, nail bar and other stores).

Entry Fee

We meet during Eclectic Games' Monday games evening, thanks to Becky, Daryl and the staff at the shop. They have an entry fee of £5.00, just pay in cash or card to the person on the till, but the first visit is for free.

Note the shop is open all day now and game playing starts from 18:00, but Go playing does not usually start until 18:30.

If you arrive a little after 18:30 the shutters may be partially lowered to discourage unwanted visitors; just duck under to enter the shop.

The shop is sometimes closed during bad weather or staff illness, as well as some bank holidays (check their website for details).

Games Room

We meet in the lounge just outisde the large upstairs playing room of the shop (sorry no disabled access). There will be lots of other games going on in the playing room, such as Settlers, Warcraft, trading games. The consequence is that it is sometimes a bit noisy if the the room doors are open, especially when players start discussing the rules.

Usually we have a couple of players of dan playing strength and also players who are working their way up the kyu grades. Complete beginners are of course welcome. It is best to arrive at or near the start, as we often get tired and leave around 21:00.

There is a machine selling water (50p), cans (65p-100p), bottles (120p-135p), bag of sweets (125p) and chocolate (65p-75p), but unfortunately no longer a coffee machine. You are not allowed to bring in fast food or drink alcohol.

Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Parking

Reading has very limited on-road town centre parking and what there is seems to be on meters, even in to the evening. There are two nearby multistoreys, in Queens Road and Mill Lane, which offer a cheaper evening rate, if you can't find anywhere else.

However we are less than five minutes from the station and several bus routes stop at the end of the alley on Friar Street.

Shop

Naturally the shop stocks an extensive range of games, including traditional games such as Go.
